Adding a -s or an -ed to a word that ends with a y can be sometimes be confusing. Change the y to an ie if the y directly follows a consonant.

Examples:

1.	remedy	+	s	= remedies
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the consonant (d), comes directly before the y, the y should become an ie.

2.	try	+	s	= tries
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the consonant (r), comes directly before the y, the y should become an ie.

3.	cry	+	ed	= cried
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the consonant (r), comes directly before the y, the y should become an ie.

4.	ally	+	ed	= allied
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the consonant (l), comes directly after a vowel e, the y remains.

If the y at the end of a word comes directly after a vowel, the y remains, and -s or -ed can simply be added to the end of the word.

Examples:

1.	attorney	+	s	= attorneys
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the y comes directly after a vowel (e), the y remains.

2.	monkey	+	s	= monkeys
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the y comes directly after a vowel (e), the y remains.

3.	play	+	ed	= played
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the y comes directly after a vowel (a), the y remains.

4.	stay	+	ed	= stayed
	(word)		(suffix)

Since the y comes directly after a vowel (a), the y remains.
