Master of Science (MS) Program of Study Committee

Students should work with their major professor to begin planning a suitable program for completion of the HCI graduate coursework. Before the end of the first year, students, in coordination with their major professor, should appoint their Program of Study Committee. The composition and responsibilities of the committee must be in accordance with the Graduate College guidelines (see bullet points below).

The committee should include faculty whose expertise will ensure a breadth of knowledge on the committee and whose knowledge and research interests can aid and complement the student’s research interests.

Master's with thesis committee makeup: The master’s program of study committee for a student completing a thesis consists of at least three members of the graduate faculty. It must include two members, including the major professor from the HCI faculty. One member of the committee must be outside the student's major (not an HCI faculty member). The MS thesis is the result of a focused research effort by the student and must be prepared according to the Graduate College requirements.
Master's with creative component (non-thesis) and Capstone committee makeup: The master’s program of study committee for a student completing a creative component consists of one member of the HCI faculty as the major professor. One additional HCI faculty member is needed on the committee.

Annual Reviews For MS Thesis Students

Annual Reviews will be conducted for MS Thesis students. An email will be sent to faculty and students announcing the time for Annual Reviews. Students then complete a web form. Non-confidential student answers are sent to the major professor/faculty advisor; the advisor signs off on these answers. Confidential answers will stay with the HCI DOGE.

Expired Courses

The age of a course used on an Academic Plan (AP) is defined as the time between the year the credits were earned and the year that the student graduates.

A course is considered expired when its age is greater than the time limit for the master’s or doctoral program. The Graduate College Time-to-Degree Limit is seven years. Graduate programs may establish more restrictive policies for both time-to-degree limits and expired course limits.

The HCI Graduate Program accepts expired courses on an HCI student's academic plan.
